Blue Angels Therapeds

Treatment With A Connection

ABOUT

My name is Aura Garza, I am a BCBA, LBA and the owner of Blue Angels Therapeds. My story….

Although I started my career as an engineer, I’ve always wanted to work in a helping profession. Fourteen years ago, I had the opportunity to return to school and I earned my Masters in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M – Central Texas. After getting my license as a Licensed Professional Counselor, my daughter was diagnosed with ASD. As any new parent, I wanted to learn how to help my daughter and for the first time I experienced ABA therapy. I was captivated by the power I’ve seen in changing human behavior and I knew I found my calling. The following year I became a BCBA after studying Behavior Analysis at University of North Texas.

Since my start, there has been six years of working in this field and I'm falling deeper and deeper in love with my profession and these wonderful kids. I am very thankful for each of them, of what they taught me, and I am honored that I was a part of their lives. Seeing them flourish it was always my reward.

I am very proud to say that I had great results working with kids with all levels of disability, starting from 2 years old to 21 years old. I have worked with very aggressive and oppositional kids with wonderful results. Recently, I even started working with adult population who have many comorbid disorders (Schizophrenia, Dementia, PTSD, OCD, Impulse Control Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, all kind of genetic disorders, etc) and I see great things happening.

AUTISM THERAPY

Why Blue Angels Therapeds?

Quality matters. We take pride in your child's progress! Join the tribe...we guarantee for all In-Training Blue Angels their "forever wings"!!!

My approach to treatment combines ABA and PRT techniques to eliminate barriers in learning by addressing individual-environment unity rather than focusing only on the child, resulting in a holistic treatment.

B - Build a Safe Bond (The pairing process is essential in developing a trust, working relationship with our clients! The purpose of pairing is to establish yourself as the ultimate reinforcer and as a secure base from where the individual is open to explore.

A safe Bond assists in establishing instructional control, meaning the child listens to and complies with your instructions.)

A - Attune the Environment (motivate, support, inform, empower)

T - Target Pivotal skills and behavior cusps

Pivotal Response Treatment is a naturalistic intervention model derived from ABA approaches. Rather than target individual behaviors one at a time, PRT targets pivotal areas of a child's development, such as motivation, responsivity to multiple cues, self-management, social initiations, and empathy.

These skills are pivotal because they allow learners with ASD to make widespread collateral improvements in the domains of communication, socialization, and behavior. PRT increases children's motivation to engage and learn using research-based motivational procedures, such as child choice, task variation, rewarding attempts, and use of direct, natural reinforcers. PRT empowers family members to implement interventions, with learning embedded across daily routines in the natural environment.

Pivotal behaviors can lead the learner to new untrained behaviors (e.g., asking questions, variation in speaking, etc.).

Training pivotal behaviors can lead to shortened interventions, new repertoires, increase contact with reinforcement, and efficient learning.

A behavioral cusp is a special type of behavior change that significantly expand a client's repertoire to new settings, new contingencies and new stimulus controls

new reinforcers, new environments, new related behaviors (generativeness) and competition with archaic or problem behaviors.

Rosales-Ruiz and Baer (1997) list important qualities of behavior cusps:

  • The amount of change they create

  • If they expose behavior to new cusps

  • And if society deems it socially significant to the organism

Environment

Behavior analysis focuses on the fact that behaviors are learned through interaction and feedback from the environment. The “environment” consists of anything in the learner’s surrounding. Examples of environmental variables include: how other people interact with the learner; different sounds, smells, tactile, or visual inputs; and events that have happened in the past with the learner (i.e., learning history).

Learning will occur when the right teaching environment is established and consistently maintained.

We understand the importance of the role that family members play in a child’s environment, since they’re the most constant and important teachers. Our parent training, teaches them why specific behaviors occur and how to effectively respond to their children. We’ll follow the child’s lead in their natural setting and identify multiple learning opportunities to promote family participation. By providing tools and strategies, our programs empower parents and allow their children, our students the opportunity to thrive in their own environment.
